Rohit Shetty has addressed concerns over contestant safety on Khatron Ke Khiladi 15, with the filmmaker and host defending the intense challenges featured on the stunt-based reality show. His comments come amid growing criticism from viewers over the physical risks involved in some of the tasks.
Speaking about the safety measures followed during the show to Variety, Rohit said the stunts are not designed simply to shock contestants or put them in danger. "The stunts are designed to challenge contestants," he said, stressing that each challenge is planned with safety protocols in place.
The filmmaker explained that every stunt goes through several rounds of testing before contestants perform it. "We test the stunts before the contestants perform them," Rohit said, adding that participants are also briefed about the challenges and the precautions they need to follow.
The issue of safety has become a talking point this season after contestants were seen dealing with physically demanding tasks. One of the early challenges involved rubber pellets, leaving contestants including Gaurav Khanna, Karan Wahi, Vishal Aditya Singh and Shagun Sharma with visible marks. Photos of Gaurav's injuries subsequently surfaced online, leading to questions about the nature of the stunts.
Rohit, however, maintained that the show does not compromise on safety. "There are proper safety measures in place," he said, pointing out that trained stunt professionals and medical teams are present during the challenges.
The safety debate intensified after a task involving hot molten wax. Rubina Dilaik, Ruhaanika Dhawan, Harsh Gujral and Vishal Aditya Singh were required to endure hot wax being poured over their hands. The task left contestants visibly uncomfortable, with Ruhaanika eventually withdrawing. The episode triggered criticism from viewers who felt that the challenge went too far.
The makers have also defended their safety standards. Banijay CEO Deepak Dhar said the production follows international safety protocols and conducts extensive checks before filming. The show is shot at an international location with professional teams overseeing the stunts.
Rohit also emphasised that the essence of Khatron Ke Khiladi is about confronting fear. "The whole idea is to challenge your fears," he said, explaining that contestants voluntarily participate knowing that the show involves demanding physical and mental challenges.
Contestants have previously spoken about the precautions taken behind the scenes as well. Karan Wahi has said that participants are properly briefed before performing stunts, while Avika Gor highlighted the presence of professional stunt teams and medical support.
As Khatron Ke Khiladi 15 continues, the show is expected to feature more difficult challenges. While viewers may continue to debate whether some tasks are excessively intense, Rohit and the makers maintain that safety remains a priority.
For Rohit, the objective is to strike a balance between creating thrilling television and ensuring contestants are protected. "We want to challenge them, but safety always comes first," he said.
