A teacher from the coal hub of Dhanbad in Jharkhand is among 82 teachers and educators who received the coveted National Teachers' Award presented by President Droupadi Murmu in Delhi on Saturday, coinciding with Teachers' Day, observed on September 5 in India every year, to honour the birthday of Dr Sarvepalli Radhakrishnan, who was not only a teacher and philosopher but a former Indian President.
Munmun Bhattacharya (42), headmistress of Government Middle School in Barmasia, Dhanbad was the only teacher from Jharkhand selected for the award, a notification issued by the Ministry of Education said.
She, was one among many teachers from across the country, who received a certificate of appreciation, a shawl and a cash prize of Rs 50,000, highlighting the importance of teachers.
"At the Barmasia Government Middle School, there was a resource crunch and I had to develop Teaching Learning Materials (TLM) to make education engaging and effective for the children," Bhattacharya told PTI.
Bhattacharya said she did not limit education to textbooks alone and instead, promoted innovation-based activities, computer-aided learning, and the effective use of library.
Efforts were also made to foster leadership qualities and self-confidence in the children through various activities, she said.
