It is a Konkani musical that has made waves throughout India and across the world. This month, Nachom-ia Kumpasar will find its way to Karachi as part of the I Am Karachi Film Festival. The film will be screened on February 26.

The Konkani musical Nachom-ia Kumpasar (Let's Dance To The Rhythm), which released in 2014, tells the story of Goan singers Chris Perry and Lorna Cordeiro; their relationship and their musical journey. The story is told through over 20 popular Konkani songs recorded in the 1960s and 1970s.

"They got in touch with us and asked if we could send the film across. What actually made us keen on taking part was the fact that Karachi has a large Goan diaspora. People have been asking me for a while now to screen the film but things weren't working out. This festival offers that opportunity," says director Bardroy Barretto.

Unfortunately, no one from the team will be attending the screening. "There was a lot of back-and-forth over the screening and other issues. By the time it got confirmed, it was too late for us to plan our visit; we had other work lined up here," he rues.

The film will join other favourites like Sharmeen Obaid Chinoy's documentary, Songs of Lahore, Kalo Pothi, a film based in northern Nepal about a childhood friendship against the tyranny of war and violence, and Studio Ghibli's animated film, The Red Turtle.
