Pune is no longer a pollution-free and green city like it was a few years ago. Lately, the city has been battling environment-related concerns such as river pollution, soaring temperatures and waste disposal problems.

To find a remedy for the situation, Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) and Janawani, a non-governmental organisation, have joined hands to implement the Zero Garbage Ward Project in 20 wards of the city, starting this Saturday.

With a motto of making the city clean and garbage-free, the NGO and PMC are working on a project that will be initiated with a marathon in which employees of corporate firms will participate along with Punekars. The drive is aimed at creating mass awareness about this issue.

Saroj Badgujar of Janawani shares more details, "The main objective of our Zero Garbage Project is to segregate dry and wet waste on a larger scale, which is not usually done. People fail to understand that it is important to dispose waste material in a proper manner for a cleaner city environment. To ensure this, we are organising this marathon."

Badgujar adds that this is the first time that it's happening on a large scale where hundreds of corporate participants will run for a greener future. "It's a new concept but we are geared up for it. We have flags, banners and slogans ready and we are looking forward to reach several citizens on the route of the marathon. Creating as much awareness as possible is our agenda this weekend," adds Badgujar.

About 1,400 participants will take part in the marathon and people can join on the spot. The route of the marathon is five kilometers long and it will kickstart at 7 am from Sharada Chowk, Erandwane.
