When the roads are wet and slippery - a phenomenon that lasts for a quarter of the year during the Bombay monsoons - drivers need to be wary and careful. However, Smaaash, the entertainment centre located at Kamala Mills in Lower Parel, will be giving city speedsters a chance to break free of the 40km/h mark next month, when it hosts the Monsoon Karting Championship.

The competition will be held on August 21 and 22 across five categories including kids, young adults, open, women, and fun, and will be supported by the Singapore Grand prix, one of the worlds finest racing events that is scheduled to be held later this year in September. Each category will have a drive time of 6 minutes, with participants being provided with the necessary gear (neck braces, knee pads ankle pads and helmets) by the entertainment centre.

Registrations for the competition are open till August 19, and the top 32 elimination round will take place on August 20, followed by the top 16, top 8, and top 5 (finale) the next day. Apart from the cash prize of Rs 50,000, winners of the open category will also receive Grand Stand tickets to the Singapore Grand Prix, along with a five-star hotel stay. Smaaash's racing track spans over a 430-meter long circuit, and unlike conventional outlets the go-karts used by them don't run on fue but are electronic, powered by Lithium batteries, and the track in itself, is quite a sight with its neon lighting.
