The first Oktoberfest was held on October 12, 1810, when the Bavarian royalty invited the citizens of Munich to join the celebration of the marriage of Crown Prince Ludwig of Bavaria to Princess Therese von Sachsen-Hildburghausen. It went on to become a 16-day festival running from late September to the first weekend in October with more than 6 million people from around the world attending the event every year. Only beer conforming to the Reinheitsgebot, and brewed within the city limits of Munich, can be served at the Munich Oktoberfest. Beers meeting these criteria are designated Oktoberfest Beer.
