Dear Diana

Dear Diana,
For the last six months, I have been friendly with this guy who is a musician. He is part of a band and plays at local gigs. He has just started off, but he knows his true calling is music. He has an engineering degree, but he is now concentrating on making a mark as a musician. He knows how to play several musical instruments and serenades me with his own compositions. Right now, I am friendly with him, but do not know about the future. My parents know that I am hanging out with him. Sometimes, I go with him for his shows and by the time I get back home, it is post midnight. They do not like it and have their apprehensions about a future with him. How do I put all their fears to rest?

Dear Tulip,
Their fears are about a steady livelihood. Right now he is into gigs, so he gets paid per show. Your parents may fear that, at times, there may not be too many shows for a steady flow of income. This could be the reason why they disapprove of your guy. You need to tell them that as he is just starting off, it will take him time to establish himself. There are several options for musicians - from stage shows, films, TV and the ad world besides private gigs. Take them along for one of his shows, so that they get a feel of the attention he gets from the crowd. A musician's work is not a 9-5 job, it is a creative and collaborative effort. Once they see for themselves, they are sure to change their opinion.
