Your mobile connection may turn out to be inactive if you do not provide your identity proofs at the time of recharge. Yes! You heard it right, at the time of recharging your prepaid connection and not only while getting a new connection.

This happened after the Supreme Court of India asked the central government to verify all current account details of mobile users in India. The court suggested that prepaid users may be asked to provide their identity proofs at the time of recharge.

Chief Justice of India (CJI), JS Khehar, has asked the government for an immediate implementation of Aadhar-based authentication for mobile subscribers. However, Attorney General Mukul Rohatgi in a statement said that Aadhar-based verification takes considerable amount of time to be implemented. It may also hurt phone-based banking and monitory transactions. However, the government is working on it and will put the same Aadhaar-based KYC in place within a year.

Presently, a user only needs to provide his identity proof at the time of taking a new SIM card. The address and identity proofs given by the user while taking a prepaid or postpaid connection appears to be fake most of the time. This is creating a major security risk in the country.

The Attorney General said that more than 110 crore people have enrolled for Aadhar cards. While all other identity proofs can be cloned, the biometric details provided on Aadhar card cannot be cloned or duplicated. So, Aadhar-based verification will not only reduce or discontinue the purchase of prepaid connections against fake identity proofs, but also ensure security in online financial transactions.
