Once upon a time, you needed to understand octal system to call yourself a geek. For instance, if your marketing person came to you and said that he wanted you to grant write permission for a owner of a file, read permission for the group and none for others, you would do a 'chmod 640' for this file (if you don't understand what this means, you are not a geek and you can't join the Mystic Knights of the Lambda Calculus).
