The relentless pollution, dust in the air due to construction and repair works leaves several city dwellers with respiratory and skin problems. To ease these troubles, husband-wife duo of Jamsheed and Lyla Mehta have started the city's first salt spa, called Salt Escape.

An engineer by profession, Jamsheed tells us, "I have rhinitis. For such conditions, you take medicines and get better. But for how long can you be under medication? I looked online to find a natural therapy and found out about Halotherapy or salt therapy." Jamsheed then came across The Salt Cave, a National Health Services (NHS) accepted company from UK to treat Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD).

The Salt Cave has various centres in the UK. The Mehtas have sourced the technology and equipment from the company. The therapy mainly helps alleviate symptoms of various respiratory diseases such as asthma, bronchitis, COPD, congestion, coughs, cystic fibrosis, colds and flu. Ear infections and skin allergies as well as problems such as acne, eczema and psoriasis can be cured, they tell us. Salt, which is anti-inflammatory, cleanses the airways and improves breathing, it can also help sportspersons and singers.

All one has to do is sit and breathe in to make most of the salt therapy

What's the therapy?
Salt therapy has now been in use since decades. One of the first known positive effects were noticed on Polish salt mine workers who had a very low rate of respiratory diseases. The therapy involves dry salt particles that are led into the room through a machine, all one has to do is breathe in normally. The level of particles released in the room is determined by the severity of one's condition. The salt used in the machine is imported from Germany, as regular iodised salt cannot be used for optimum benefits.

What's on offer?
Salt Escape has three rooms - private therapy room minus salt-laden floors and walls, a children's room and a group therapy room for adults. The two group rooms have sieved soft salt on the floor that feels like sand and walls covered with salt too. Though, these are more for aesthetic purposes as the main therapy is offered through the micro salt particles released in the air. The kids salt room has games, toys, puzzles, books, television, and an adult can accompany them for free (for kids aged below seven years).

They also offer Wi-Fi, so it's possible to sit in the climate-controlled room and browse the Internet or finish your office work. The therapy has no known side effects and also does not involve any effort as all one has to do is sit and breathe in the climate-controlled room. Each session is an hour-long and based on one's health condition, one can decide on the number of sessions to sign up for.

At: Hanuman Building, ground floor, Perin Nariman Street, behind Reserve Bank of India, Fort.

Cost Rs 1,600 for one session, they offer various combination prices for multiple sessions
