Initially considered an aphrodisiac by the ancient Romans, the nitrates in beets help control hypertension and cholesterol.

Apart from being rich in folic acid, potassium, and manganese, this root vegetable also fights cancer cells with betacyanin, a magic antioxidant.

Here are 3 ways to incorporate beets into your diet:

Wrap it: Blend 1 small boiled beetroot with 2 tsp olive oil, 1 clove garlic, 3 tsp tahini and 200 gm cooked chickpeas for a tasty hummus to line your favourite chicken or vegetable wrap.

Feed your skin: Boil a beetroot in about 1 cup of water and use the water to treat acne and inflammations.

Have it with yoghurt: Blend 2 chopped beets, 2 carrots, a handful of mint leaves and some roasted cumin seeds in 2 cups yoghurt. Season with black salt. Pour the beetroot chaas over ice cubes into a tall glass.
