The third edition of the Marathi film festival Nave Valan, promises a great line up of National Award-winning Marathi movies for film buffs.

With Marathi films bagging many awards every year, its high time they got their credit. NCPA's Marathi Film Festival -- Nave Valan or New Turn -- has been screening various award winning contemporary Marathi movies since the last two years. This year's schedule too, promises a great time for movie maniacs. The films that will be screened at the festival are Champions, this year's blockbuster Balgandharva, Taryanche Bait, multiple award-winning movie Baboo Band Baaja and a brand new movie that will be premiered at the festival, Shala.

A still from Rajesh Pinjani's Baboo Band Baaja

Speaking about his film Shala, director, Sujay Dahake says, "It is a coming of age love story of kids set against the background of the emergency. Shala is based on a best-selling novel by Milind Bokil. The movie was earlier screened at the Leicester Square in London and this is its first outing in India. Bokil says he had a tough time while directing the movie, as he had to handle 40 kids on the set. About the treatment of the movie, he says "The movie has a very European feel to it and in spite of being set in India I have used western classical music for the soundtrack because I wanted a minimal sound. Since it's the first time the movie's being screened in the country, NCPA makes for a good platform. I would like to get a review from the audience there."

Another must watch movie from the festival is Baboo Band Baaja, which won three National Awards for Best Child Artist, Best Debut Director and Best Actress. The movie was also screened at the Shanghai International Film Festival. "Inspite of winning awards and getting a great response everywhere the movie is screened, I get nervous before every film screening.

Each one of them is like a new exam," says director, Rajesh Pinjani. The movie is the story of Baboo, the son of a poor band player. Though his father wants him to join the band the mother, does everything possible to get him educated. Pinjani, who is himself from Vidarbha region of Maharashtra where the movie is set, has kept every detail as real as possible and has also incorporated personal childhood experiences in the film.

Champions, a heart wrenching tale about two brothers, who live a hand-to-mouth existence but are determined to be educated, will also be screened at the festival. If opulence is your taste, watch the musical Balgan-dharva, which tells the tale of Marathi theatre genius Narayan Rajhans. Veteran actor Sachin Khedekar's movie Taryanche Bait is sure to get your eyes moist with its story of a father trying to fulfil his son's wish of staying in a palatial hotel.
