An elephant calf was found dead at the confluence of two rivers in Chhattisgarh's Raigarh district on Monday, a forest official said.
The carcass was spotted at the confluence of Mand and Kurkut rivers in Kharsia forest range this morning, the official added.
"Preliminary findings from the post-mortem suggest the calf died due to internal injuries. A fractured pelvic bone was also detected during the examination," he said.
Samples have been sent for further analysis and investigation to ascertain the exact cause of death, the official added.
The latest incident comes amid growing concern over elephant mortality in Raigarh district. More than 10 elephant calves have died in Dharamjaigarh forest division in the district over the past year due to various reasons.
On the night of May 23, an elephant calf died after getting trapped in a pond in a village under Dharamjaigarh forest division. Two other calf deaths were reported in the same division on May 8 and May 11, officials said.
Following the series of elephant calf deaths, experts from Dehradun and Bareilly visited Dharamjaigarh last week to assess habitat conditions and train local staff in managing elephant habitats and reducing mortality.
According to forest department, more than 45 elephants have died from various causes across Chhattisgarh over the last 28 months.
