A tigress that killed two people here earlier this month died after being captured and tranquillised by forest officials in the Dudhwa Tiger Reserve buffer zone, officials said on Wednesday.
A forest department team, assisted by veterinarians, successfully located and tranquillised the four-year-old tigress near Ramnagar Kalan village on Tuesday evening.
The animal had killed two people in separate attacks on June 14 and 15 in the Majhgain range area of the buffer zone. It was tranquillised and caged on Tuesday following an intensive operation by the forest authorities, the officials said.
After being brought to the range office, the animal underwent a medical examination and was found to be fit and healthy, they said.
Dudhwa Buffer Zone Deputy Director Kirti Chaudhary said the tigress appeared normal throughout the day after its rescue.
"The tigress was rescued early Tuesday and it was normal till the evening. However, late evening, it suddenly collapsed and died," she told PTI.
Chaudhary said the exact cause of death is not yet known.
"We are not sure of the reason. The carcass has been sent to the Indian Veterinary Research Institute (IVRI), Bareilly, to ascertain the exact cause of death," she said.
