It's s pity that the treasures in the north-eastern part of our country remain largely unexplored and unknown to the vast majority. One of the smaller north eastern states, Meghalaya has a treasure trove that few in the eastern hinterlands know about. And it's this that enters our bucket list -- to explore the many caves that dot this area.

Caving, also called spelunking, is a relatively new activity for an average Indian adventure-seeker. In the Khasi Hills lie caves and caverns -- some of them well mapped and accessible, others not -- with gorgeous stalactite and stalagmite formations. The high percentage of annual rainfall and huge deposits of limestone are said to be the reason behind the formation of these caves.

While some are dark and mysterious and the sorts that look like a maze in which you can be lost for a long, long time, others have massive pools of clear water and large halls inside them. If you don't suffer from claustrophobia, sign up for this adventure that will have you stoop, crawl, slither, walk, squeeze through and may be even swim. Only to discover a whole new world beneath ours.

If you're planning a caving trip to Meghalaya, it's advisable to do so before the rains set in. Odati Adventures will customise a trip for a group.
