So you can't figure a Jibber from a Crampon? Or play dumb when the instructor tells you to sharpen your Jumaring skills on a trek? The Trip whips up a handy guide to max your Extreme sport fundas Bicycle Motocross or BMX
Base Jumping
Using a parachute to jump from fixed objects. B for Building, A for Antenna (or Tower), S for Span (i.e.: a bridge), E for Earth (i.e.: mountain edge)
BMX OR Bicycle Motocross
This is a form of bicycling in which specially designed bikes (with 20-inch wheels) race on a dirt track. BMX refers to all forms of riding done with these bikes, including freestyle and jump. BMX racing was inspired by motocross racing.
Belay
Literally means "to hold"; it refers to the system of devices (anchor, rope, belay device etc.) that hold a climber to protect him/her during a fall, or the act of controlling the system. The person managing the belay is called the "belayer".
Crampons
Steel or aluminium spikes that attach to boots for added traction in ice or snow climbing.
Dirt Jumping
Using a bike or motorcycle to jump from a formed pile of dirt. Once airborne, the rider performs a stunt or trick before landing.
Freestyle
With BMX and skateboarding, freestyle involves tricks or stunts done while on a relatively smooth surface (i.e.: pavement). There are no set patterns, and these can be done individually or in a jam session (often called Street or Park).
FMX OR Freestyle Motocross
This is a variation on motocross where riders go over a series of jumps and are judged on acrobatic ability.
Jibber
Slang term for a snowboarder.
Jug
A large handhold that is easy to grab (like holding onto the rim of a bucket or jug).
Jumaring
It's a technique climbers use to ascend a rope. Jumaring requires two ascending devices (one for each hand), and two nylon ladders, called aiders, for the feet. This technique helps to make big wall climbs and speed ascents in the mountains.
Street Luge
A street luge is a specialised skateboard used for extreme downhill racing. While riding it, the rider lies down on the board on his or her back, with feet facing forward. The street luge easily crosses speeds of 70 mph (115 km/h).
Vert
A vert is a half-pipe that reaches vertically and is usually 10-13 feet tall. It is used for BMX and skateboarding. The rider gathers enough momentum from the vertical drop to go airborne and performs aerial tricks.
Wakeboarding
Developed by combining snowboarding, surfing and water skiing, this surface water sport involves riding a wakeboard over water. The rider is towed behind a motorboat at speeds of 18 to 24 miles (per hour), depending on the water conditions, board size, rider's weight, and rider's comfort speed.
X Games
This annual multi-sporting event is the Olympics equivalent for Extreme or Adventure sports athletes, with Summer and Winter editions being continuously held from 1995 and 1997, respectively.
