Initially known as the New Poona College, this iconic landmark in Pune was inaugurated by the British Governor Lord Willingdon in 1916.

It was later renamed as the Sir Parashurambhau College, as a mark of gratitude towards the Rajasaheb of Jamkhindi state who donated a generous sum of Rs 2 lakhs in the memory of his father. The Shikshan Prasarak Mandali governs SP College.

The college has just finished 99 years and is looking towards its centenary year, which the college is going to celebrate in 2015-16. In its early days, the college offered courses only in the Arts faculty; the Science stream was introduced from 1927 while courses in Commerce began in 1976.

The junior college in all the three faculties was added in 1976. The structure is a heritage building and also boasts of a sprawling sports ground and swimming pool. The mediums of instruction include English and Marathi.

Apart from the three main streams, the college offers BBA, BCS, MCS and post graduation courses.
