Search engine giant Google paid tribute to the legendary R.K. Narayan, writer of popular short story collection, 'Malgudi Days' among other works with a commemorative doodle.

The doodle features an illustration of a man reading 'Malgudi Days' with the book's cover bearing the title and the author's image.

Malgudi Days, a collection of short stories was published in 1943.

In 1986, a few of the stories in the book were included in the Malgudi Days television series and, directed by actor and director, Shankar Nag.

In 2004, the project was revived with film-maker Kavitha Lankesh replacing the late Shankar Nag as director. The new series was telecast from April 26, 2006 on Doordarshan.

Narayan is also renowned for his semi-autobiographical trilogy, Swami and Friends, The Bachelor of Arts and The English Teacher.

The fictional town of Malgudi, which is the setting for most of Narayan's stories was first introduced in 'Swami and Friends', his first novel. His narratives highlight social context and provide a feel for his characters through everyday life.

In a writing career that spanned over sixty years, Narayan received many awards and honours. These include the AC Benson Medal from the Royal Society of Literature and the Padma Vibhushan, India's second-highest civilian award. He was also nominated to the Rajya Sabha, the upper house of India's parliament.
