Attend this interesting event in Mumbai celebrating BR Ambedkar's legacy

Abhijit Khandkar and Pooja Ashokkumar

Today, the Ambedkar Reading Circle and Bombay Tamil History will join hands to host a day-long celebration of Dr BR Ambedkar: Liberty, Equality, Fraternity. The event will begin with a reading of Dr Ambedkar's most essential text Annihilation of Caste and his reply to Mahatma Gandhi appended to it.

This will be further discussed in the context of the Poona Pact, signed on September 24, 1932, between Mahatma Gandhi and Dr Babasaheb Ambedkar. The reading will be followed by a listening session of Bhim Geet led by Pooja Ashokkumar, founder of Bombay Tamil History, and will end with a screening of Jabbar Patel's film Dr Babasaheb Ambedkar (2000), led by Pallavi Pillai.

The Ambedkar Reading Circle - Mumbai Chapter began two years ago to encourage readers to engage with marginalised voices. "We meet and read primarily at Chaityabhoomi in Dadar, (Babasaheb's cremation site). The previous reading was a book launch of a writer from the community at a Navi Mumbai venue. At the sessions, the first half involves spending some time reading the text. Then we have a free-flowing conversation about it," says Abhijit Khandkar, poet and pathologist, who facilitates the circle.

The texts have included writings of Dr Ambedkar, anti-caste works, and gender-sensitive titles. The circle has also hosted scholar and writer Anand Teltumbde in the past for a book launch of his most recent work Iconoclast: A Reflective Biography of Dr Babasaheb Ambedkar (Penguin Viking).
