Mumbai Police maintained a heavy security deployment across the city through Wednesday night and Thursday morning after brief tension erupted in the Lalbaug - Parel area during a religious procession.

Senior police officers and additional personnel were deployed at sensitive locations as a precaution, while police teams remained on the ground throughout the night. The situation was brought under control soon after the incident, and no further major untoward incident was reported.

Tension follows exchange of slogans

According to preliminary information, tension broke out in Parel on Wednesday night following an Eid procession.

An alleged exchange of slogans between two groups reportedly led to an argument, which later escalated near the Laxmi Cottage area, where stone-pelting was also reported.

Police personnel intervened immediately and brought the situation under control. Mild force was reportedly used to disperse those involved.

The exact sequence of events and the trigger behind the confrontation are still being investigated.

Senior officers rush to spot

Senior Mumbai Police officers and additional personnel rushed to the spot following the incident. Reinforcements were deployed in the area as a precaution to prevent the situation from escalating.

Joint Commissioner of Police (Law and Order) Manoj Sharma appealed to citizens not to believe rumours and said the situation was calm, with senior officers present at the spot.

Police said there was no reason for panic and maintained that the additional deployment was a precautionary measure to ensure peace and maintain law and order.

Three booked by Bhoiwada Police

Meanwhile, Bhoiwada Police in Mumbai have registered a case in connection with the incident and booked three persons along with several unidentified individuals.

The three named accused have been identified as Rehan Masood Sayyad (19), Adil Khan Ahmed Khan (19) and Miraj Mohammad Firoz Rais (18).

The case has been registered under multiple provisions of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), and under relevant sections of the Maharashtra Police Act.

The provisions invoked relate to allegations including unlawful assembly, rioting and other offences allegedly committed during the incident.

Police are also working to identify other individuals who may have been involved.

Police warn against rumours on social media

Following the incident, videos and claims about the situation in Parel were widely circulated on social media.

Police appealed to citizens not to believe or share unverified and misleading content, warning that such posts could unnecessarily fuel anger and create further tension even after the situation on the ground had returned to normal.

Citizens were urged to verify information before forwarding posts and to avoid circulating content that could disturb Mumbai's peaceful atmosphere.

Mumbai remains largely peaceful

Despite the brief tension in the Lalbaug-Parel belt, the heavy police bandobast ensured that the situation did not escalate further.

Police personnel continued to remain deployed in sensitive areas through the night, while authorities monitored the situation. Mumbai remained largely peaceful, with the investigation into the Parel incident continuing.
