A teenager, who made hoax phone calls to the police claiming he had planted bombs at six places in the city to derive "thrill" has been arrested, police said today. Masoom Shaikh (19) was picked up from suburban Goregaon last night and handed over to Azad Maidan police station for making hoax calls to the police control room which sent the force into a tizzy, Assistant Police Commissioner (Crime) Prafulla Bhosale said.

Shaikh told his interrogators he made the calls for "thrill" and to see how swiftly police responded to the situation. Shaikh also said he was not associated with any terror organisation. According to crime branch, Shaikh had on Monday called up Mumbai Police helpline number 100 thrice, using three different SIM cards.

Claiming he was a terrorist, Shaikh said he had planted explosives at Filmcity, Mahim, Khar, Bandra, Santacruz and Mulund. Frantic search operations were launched in all these places but no suspicious object was found, sources in the crime branch said.

With the help of human intelligence and technical support, police nabbed Shaikh last night and during interrogation he confessed to have made the phone calls, Bhosale said. Shaikh was handed over to Azad Maidan police who placed him under arrest.
