Thane: Juvenile held with illegal firearms worth over Rs 2 lakh

Police have apprehended a minor boy after seizing two country-made pistols and some live cartridges from his possession in Maharashtra's Thane city, an official said on Tuesday, reported news agency PTI.

Based on a tip-off, the police laid a trap on a footpath in the Wagle Estate area on Sunday and nabbed the juvenile.

On checking, the boy was found in possession of two country-made pistols and four live cartridges, valued at Rs 2.14 lakh. He did not possess any valid licence and was allegedly intending to sell the weapons illegally, the anti-extortion cell's assistant police inspector Sunil Tarmale said, reported PTI.

The boy, hailing from Chitrakoot in Uttar Pradesh, has been sent to a remand home, the police said, without specifying his age, reported PTI.

The police have registered a case under the relevant provisions of the Arms Act and the Maharashtra Police Act.

"Further investigation is underway to ascertain the source of the weapons and to identify any wider network involved in the illegal procurement and sale of firearms," Tarmale said.

Woman held for Rs 7 lakh gold jewellery theft in Thane

In another case, police have arrested a 40-year-old woman for allegedly breaking into a house in Maharashtra's Thane district and stealing gold ornaments valued at Rs 7.08 lakh, an official said on Tuesday, reported PTI.

The theft occurred on January 15 when a 51-year-old woman occupant of the house, located in the Mira Road area, had gone to cast her vote in the civic polls.

When the woman returned home after voting, she found that someone had entered the house, broken a wooden cupboard locker in the bedroom and stolen gold ornaments of Rs 7.08 lakh, Mira Bhayander-Vasai Virar's Assistant Commissioner of Police (Crime Branch) Madan Ballal said, reported PTI.

Based on her complaint, the police launched an investigation and zeroed in on a woman suspect. They took her into custody on January 17, and during interrogation, she confessed to her involvement in the offence, he said, reported PTI.

Following the information provided by the accused, all the stolen jewellery was later recovered, the police said.

The accused was booked under relevant provisions for housebreaking and theft.
