Several key railway structures and facilities at Virar Station have been completed, officials said. Representational Pic/File
Significant progress has been achieved in the redevelopment of Virar Station under the Virar-Dahanu Road Quadrupling Project, with several major infrastructure works completed and construction of new facilities moving forward.
The redevelopment project aims to improve passenger facilities, increase operational capacity and strengthen the suburban rail network in the Mumbai region.
Several key railway structures and facilities at Virar Station have been completed, including:
- RPF/GRP Building
- Route Relay Interlocking (RRI) Building
- Mid-section RRI Building between Virar and Vaitarna
- Civil works for OC Rooms 1 and 2
- Two Nalha approach bridges at Platform No. 8
- Overhead Water Tank
- Gang Tool Room
- Indoor Substation
These completed facilities are expected to support smoother railway operations and future expansion requirements.
Work on the new Virar Station Building and the elevated deck above the platforms is progressing steadily.
The elevated deck, spread across approximately 8,000 square metres, has seen major structural progress. So far:
36 columns have been erected
160 girders have been launched
2,000 square metres of deck slab have been completed
The third slab of the Stilt + 3 station building has also been cast, while finishing works are currently underway.
To facilitate construction of the elevated deck over Platforms 2, 3 and 4, the existing booking office serving Platforms 3 and 4 has been shifted to the new station building.
A new booking office with three ticket counters on the eastern side of Virar Station has also been completed and commissioned, improving convenience for passengers.
Civil works for Platform No. 8, including the retaining wall for the engineering siding and foundations for the platform covering, have been completed.
Platform No. 5B has also been completed and commissioned for receiving 15-coach EMU trains, enhancing operational flexibility.
The Foot Over Bridge between Virar and Vaitarna near Narangi Gate has been completed and opened for passenger use.
Wider Platforms to Improve Passenger Movement
As part of the station redevelopment, Platforms 3A and 4A have been widened from 6.5 metres to 10.5 metres and extended by an additional 60 metres.
The completed platform works are expected to improve passenger circulation and help manage increasing commuter movement at Virar Station.
The redevelopment of Virar Station under the Virar-Dahanu Road Quadrupling Project is expected to significantly enhance the station's ability to handle rising suburban traffic demand.
The upgraded infrastructure will support smoother train operations and provide improved facilities for commuters travelling on the Mumbai suburban network.
