Other government agencies may be floundering, but the Mumbai Traffic Police promises to come to the rescue of city motorists this monsoon. They have arranged for nearly 100 parking lots on open grounds throughout the city for motorists to leave their vehicles during heavy rains with the assurance that they will remain dry.

The move is a blessing for Mumbaikars who get stuck in floods every monsoon and end up incurring heavy repair costs. The traffic police have published this list of open spaces on their website. A senior traffic police said, "These are emergency parking lots that can be used when there is very heavy rainfall and chances of vehicles getting stranded in water is high."
It is a welcome move for motorists who suffered huge losses in previous years, especially in the 2005 deluge.
Whenever vehicles, especially cars, get stuck in floods, owners end up paying huge amounts of money for repairs. Just replacing seat covers can cost a minimum of Rs 20,000 depending on the vehicle. Overhauling the entire car, including the engine, interiors and music system would cost a minimum of Rs 1 lakh.
