A major fire broke out at Cheetah Camp, Trombay, last night and engulfed more than 300 huts in the area. It took more than four hours to douse the flames, even as 12 people were injured.

They were rushed to the Shatabdi hospital at Govandi nearby, but most of the injuries were minor. No deaths were reported. It took 12 fire engines and eight tankers to douse the flames that began at around 9 pm.

According to the doctors from the Shatabdi hospital, none of the injured suffered burns. They had cuts and bruises because of a stampede as the fire broke out. "No major causalities have been reported. The fire has destroyed many huts," said Uday Tatkare, deputy chief fire officer.

The reason behind the fire is not yet known, but residents claim that they saw a spark in one of the huts, and later heard there had been seven cylinder blasts.

Mohammed Ibrahim, a resident of Cheetah Camp, requested his neighbours to look after the houses. "Thieves have been stealing what can be salvaged from the burnt huts. We are asking our people to lock their doors and to look after their goods," said Ibrahim.

Liyaqat Tamboli, an auto rickshaw driver, who had a tough time taking his eight-month pregnant wife out of the fire to a safe place. "My house was one of the unlucky ones. The fire started from the lanes near my house. My wife is pregnant and I was worried, how I would take her to a safe place, but thanks to help from others, nothing went wrong," said Tamboli.
