Step will prevent misuse of property tax bills which can be used to pass off an illegal structure as legal

To prevent misuse of the property tax bill document and pass off an illegal structure as legal, the BMC has decided to print the words ‘illegal structure' on the bills they provide to the owner of an illegal structure after s/he pays property tax.

BMC hopes the move will help curb illegal structures in the city

Earlier, the BMC collected double property tax from owners of illegal structures. However, the civic body soon realised that owners could easily use the BMC's bill to pass off their illegal structure as legal later.

After the BMC decided to charge double property tax to the owners of illegal structures, Mahim corporator, Vijay Tandel, moved a notice of motion about the misuse of property tax bill by the concerned flat owners.

In response, BMC commissioner Sitaram Kunte replied that the body will specify the nature of the structure on the bill to avoid misuse. Tandel said, "It's a very important step to curb the illegal structures mushrooming in the city."
