Anguished family of missing travel agent furious with police for burying body without mandatory seven-day wait
"If the Mumbai police can preserve the bodies of Ajmal Qasab's friends for months, why couldn't they do the same to my brother's body for even a day?" Vijay Puradkar (45) is so angry that he can barely control his words.

The body of Vijay's missing brother, Ganesh (41), was buried by the Kasara police the day after it was found even though rules say that cops have to wait for seven days before disposing an unclaimed body.
Ganesh, a Mulund resident, had gone missing on August 29. After he didn't return home that night, his family filed a missing persons complaint.
Meanwhile, the Kasara police found Ganesh's body near Kasara on September 1 and buried it the same day.
But the family came to know about the incident on September 7 only after reading an advertisement that the police had put out on an abandoned body.

"Why couldn't they keep the body in a mortuary?" asked Vijay.
Badly decomposedBut the police say the body was so decomposed that it had to be buried.
"We had to dispose Ganesh's body because it was stinking terribly and badly decomposed.
Even the local hospital refused to accept it," said Vilas Sonde, senior inspector of Kasara police station.
The body was buried so that it could be exhumed in case another post mortem was required or if the family was found.
Chandrakant Pavaskar, additional superintendent of police, Thane (rural), added, "We will exhume the body and give it to the family for the last rites."
Rules SayWhen an abandoned body is found, the state control room is contacted.
They then pass on the message to police stations who check of missing persons complaints.
The police have to keep the body for seven days and if nobody comes forward to claim it, the body is cremated or buried.
