The 25-year-old grocer stayed with his wife Monica (22) and their two daughters Harsha (4) and Toshika (9 months). They had been living in flat no 302 of Jalaram Park in Bhandup (West) for three years.
A senior police officer supervising the case confirmed that 'dispute over a relationship' between the couple cannot be ruled out.
Police inquires have also revealed that the couple had a heated argument prior to the incident, which resulted in a scuffle between them. The Jains had an arranged marriage six years ago.
Zonal Deputy Commissioner R M Vatkar says, "Prima-facie circumstances reveal the possibility of a scuffle between the couple that night. But there is no eyewitness to the case."
Vatkar adds, "We are probing the case from all possible angles".
The mortal remains of the deceased were taken to their village in Jarol, Rajasthan for cremation on Friday evening.
"The family is mourning and we won't bother them for the next few days. However statements of relatives will be taken soon," says the police.
Meanwhile, a forensic doctor attached to Rajawadi postmortem centre told Sunday MiD DAY that Jain might have first killed his wife and then the kids. He was left-handed and seemed to have used a sharp blade to slit his right-hand wrist, which caused an injury of 3 by 5 cms. However, the wound was not deep enough to cut his arterial veins, which would have led to his death. Jain then hung himself to the ceiling fan of the kitchen using a nylon rope.
According to the expert, Jain used a linen cloth to strangulate his nine-month-old daughter and used a rope to strangulate the elder one. He used a pillow to kill his wife. The nylon rope was later used by Jain to hang himself.
The doctor has preserved blood samples of all the deceased for a hysto-pathology test to rule out any illness, alcohol traces and blood for chemical analyzer to rule out poisoning.u00a0
