Residents of Sardar Nagar in Guru Tegh Bahadur Nagar have filed a Public Interest Litigation (PIL) in the Bombay High Court, stating that due to frequent murders, thefts and drug peddling they feel unsafe in the area.
Five people Harjot Kaur, Gurcharan Vijan, Taresh Thapar, Bharat Bhishan Bhindra and Harjai have filed the PIL and 400 are supporting the suit. There are about 25 buildings in Sardar Nagar-4 and the chairman of one the buildings, Raju Oberoi, said, "There have been 25-30 thefts in one and a half year.
These thieves cut window grills to enter our houses. We had also asked for a police chowky in the area in order to feel safer." Another victim said, "Sometimes, cops refuse to register cases. My own car was stolen and thieves entered my home and stole my laptops.
There have been two murders this year." Gurcharan Vijan, another victim, added, "There are a lot of goons and drug peddling takes place on a regular basis. Cops have tightened security since we filed the PIL but we want things to be better."
Cop speak
Senior Police Inspector Sanjay Surve of Antop Hill police station, which is the concerned police station, said, "There has been one murder. We have detected many theft cases and even arrested accused in it.
There are around 100 cases of drug addicts, in which we have arrested around 175 people in a year. After this PIL we have also written to the BMC asking for a chowky in the area, as per people's wishes."
