Merzi Sodawaterwala and his Punjabi bride Aarti Sharma were the first couple to get married in Mumbai in 2009. "Last year was very bad for all of us. We were all surrounded by so many negative incidents like the economic slowdown and the terror attacks.
So we thought that we should leave all the bad behind and look forward to a good year. And what better occasion than January 1," said Sodawaterwala. The couple works with a leading financial investment bank and had registered their marriage a month ago.
Another couple also got married under the under the Special Marriage Act yesterday, while 61 other couples registered for marriage. "We are beginning the New Year with a new relationship, so it's a double celebration for us," said a groom.
However, eight couples began the New Year on a sad note, as they approached the family court for dissolution of their marriage. What's worse is that all of those involved are below the age of 35.
