Denied prostitutes, 5 constables beat man in Sangli. Three arrested, 2 fled
Picture this. On Tuesday, five constables from the local arms unit 1 and 3 of Mumbai police go to Vita, Sangli district, to attend colleague Nikam's wedding. After the ceremony, they move about in the village, order a lodge owner to arrange for prostitutes, and thrash him on refusal. This is an incident, which is sure to bring shame to the Mumbai police.u00a0u00a0
Assistant police inspector Sanjay Pawar from Vita police station said that three of the five perverts were detained, but two managed to escape.
The incident
The five were spotted loitering in the village at 4 pm near the ST stand asking for prostitutes. When the locals did not respond, they headed to Vijay Raj Lodge. The constables asked lodge owner Vijay Jadhav (45) if he could arrange for prostitutes. They even tried to pressurise him by claiming that the lodge was used for flesh trade. When Jadhav said that he could not arrange for prostitutes, the constables began thrashing him. Au00a0 local alerted the police. Officials said the arrested constables reeked of alcohol. They were identified as Prashant Shelar (28), Vinay Sonawane (20), Mahesh Jadhav (28). The absconding were identified as Mane and Swaraj.
A complaint against the constables was registered, but they were set free.
The three are still in Sangli, while the absconding constables are believed to have returned to Mumbai. JCP (Administration) B D More was unavailable for comment.
