After Miraj was put under a curfew of almost a week due to communal clashes, Ganesh Visarjan will finally take place today and residents are hoping it will go off smoothly.

"We hope that the situation remains peaceful today.

Looking at the recent terror-like situation, we hope that Ganesh Visarjan takes place peacefully. Most of us are worried that the situation may worsen once the visarjan starts," said Vinod Adsule, a resident of Sangli.

On Tuesday, the Maharashtra government decided to relax the curfew in an all-party meeting held in Sahyadri Guest House in Mumbai.

It was unanimously decided that during a specific period, Ganesh mandals will be allowed to carry out Ganesh visarjan.

Only 33 idols out of the total 154 have been immersed since Sunday, while the rest were shifted to safer places by Ganesh mandals.

The trigger

The trouble began on September 3 (Anant Chaturdashi) in Miraj when some organisations tried to raise an arch depicting Shivaji Maharaj killing Afzal Khan on the immersion procession route.

This led to communal clashes.
