The complainant, Saurabh Nishar, (28), a sports merchandise businessman and basketball coach, called senior officials through his relatives, after which he was released without a fine, but the inspector allegedly threatened him saying he should not enter her jurisdiction. The incident happened on Tuesday.

Nishar wanted to complain after he was repeatedly harassed by a drunk man on a bike at Kamala Mills (where Nishar plays football once a week). The man said he had fallen because of Nishar's driving, and threatened to hit him and damage his car. Nishar called the police who took them both to N M Joshi Marg police station.

"At the police station, the drunk man explained his side of the story and Inspector Shubhada Chavan, who was on duty, decided that both should be charged. I pleaded with her to hear my side, to which she said that I was being rude and arrogant.

I told Inspector Chavan that the man was under the influence of alcohol he had admitted to being drunk to the police who brought us there but she said I should not teach her the law and shouted at me for disrespecting her," said Nishar. A constable asked him to pay a fine of Rs 300 for lane cutting.

However, Chavan allegedly then told him to fine Rs 2000 for rash driving. Nishar said, "When I refused to pay, she told me I will be kept in the police station and produced in the Bhoiwada court next day. I was shocked." A relative of Nishar then called senior officials in the department, after which he was allowed to leave around 1 am.

However, he says Inspector Chavan warned him not to play there and not to show his face in the area. "Thankfully one of my relatives was there to help me. What about other people who don't have this help? If I did not have influence I would have been in jail today for no reason.

Police need to listen to both the sides in an issue," said Nishar. He has written to the Commissioner of Police, Additional Commissioner of Police of Central Zone, and Deputy Commissioner of Police Zone 3 about the matter.

Official speak
Senior Inspector Ajay Patankar of N M Joshi Marg police station said, "I am not aware of the matter. However I will make an inquiry."
