Smoke was seen coming out of one of the motor coaches in a CST-Panvel local train near Masjid station; over 20 trains en route Panvel were cancelled

In just a week since the upgradation of power from 1,500-V DC to 25,000-V AC on Central Railway (CR) Harbour line, the new system has already run into trouble.

An overheated motor coach of a CST-Panvel local started billowing smoke around 5.20 pm on Friday as soon as it crossed Masjid station.

In a 12-car train, there are four motor coaches, each powering two trailer coaches.

The overheating led to a unit failure, shutting down 20 train services bound for Panvel. To go to Panvel, commuters had to take the main line to reach Kurla, where they could interchange.

Hundreds of commuters were inconvenienced as the services were cancelled.

To CR officials, the service disruption was no big deal. A CR official said that such disruptions are a regular affair and the problem was rectified by 7 pm.
