A 25-year-old New Zealand resident who was looking forward to shopping for her relative's wedding in Mumbai got a rude shock when a garments salesperson allegedly molested her on the pretext of taking her measurements.

The accused: Dipesh Prajapati

The NRI advocate had arrived in the city on February 6 and is staying at her relative's house in Vashi, where she went shopping for some clothes for the wedding on February 10. According to the police, the accused, Dipesh Prajapati was a salesman at a shop they visited, called Princess.

Police Inspector Suraj Padvi from Vashi police station said, "The incident took place around 4 pm, when the survivor had arrived at the store for wedding shopping. Prajapati, on the pretext of taking her measurements, touched her private parts. The survivor felt his actions were unnecessary for measurements and came to the police station in order to register a case against him."

Padvi added that although a team was immediately dispatched to the spot, the accused had fled by then. However, the cops managed to apprehend him in Vashi the very next day, based on a tip-off. He was booked under Section 354A (1) (physical contact and advances involving unwelcome and explicit sexual overtures) of the Indian Penal Code and was remanded to police custody after being produced in court.
