Scores of commuters were stranded at Kurla and other stations, and in some local trains

A goods train derailed due to garbage on Kurla-Trombay line around on Tuesday midnight, disrupting services on the Central Railway's Harbour Line and stranding scores of commuters in local trains and on stations.

This is the second incident of a train derailment due to garbage on Central Railway, the earlier being near Parsik tunnel in December 2017. On October 2, 2019, in a similar incident, a local train had derailed near Mahim in garbage overflowing the rail tracks on Western Railway.

Though no casualty was reported in the incident, harbour line passengers were detained for a long time as the mishap took place near Kurla station when the goods train was crossing over the Harbour Line around 11.45 pm.

The mishap halted services on the Harbour Line, as some portion of the derailed wagon got stuck at the crossover point of the Harbour and Kurla-Trombay goods line.

"One trolley (set of wheels) of the goods train derailed on the Trombay goods line near Kurla station. No one was injured in the mishap," Central Railway spokesperson said.

"Trains on the harbour line resumed around 1.30 am after the derailed wagon was removed with the help of another locomotive from the rear end. The entire work of restoration of the damaged track was also completed around 2.45 am," the spokesperson said.
