The district consumer disputes redressal forum, central Mumbai, has fined an agency for giving a medically unfit maid to a Malad resident, based on the latter's complaint filed on August 6, 2016.

Rajita Enghakat said she had approached Shree Enterprises and paid its proprietor, Sandeep Patil, Rs 14,000 for a domestic help to take care of her baby. Patil sent a woman to Enghakat, who joined on July 29, 2015. But, shortly after, the maid fell ill and even had to be hospitalised, with Enghakat having to pay the hospital for her treatment.

Enghakat had called up Patil and asked him for a refund, but he failed to. She then filed a complaint with the forum, seeking refund of R14,000 and a compensation of R4 lakh.

In her complaint, Enghakat said, "As she was not medically fit to look after my child, I discontinued her services."

After Patil failed to show up or respond after a service of notice was issued to him, the forum, presided over by judge B S Wasekar and member S R Sanap, observed, "Patil failed to provide service to the complainant even after taking the money for it. He must refund the amount with interest."

The order, which came on July 12, has given Patil two months to pay the complainant R14,000 with nine per cent interest from the date of filing the complaint, as well as R5,000 towards litigation costs.
