Club member begins election run-up with letter of caution

It's a red-letter day for the Cricket Club India (CCI), literally.

The club, which has been in the news for the wrong reasons including the alleged suicide of former CEO Kamaljeet Bonny Rajpal on May 8 after a female member accused him of sexual assault, is headed for its annual elections in September.

And, in what could be a beginning to a contentious run-up to the election, Suresh Bafna, property and corporate legal consultant and life member, has written a letter Live and Let Live to approximately 4,000 members on nine points where the current committee has failed.

The letter

In the letter dated August 18, Bafna said: "It is an awareness campaign, focusing on negligence of sporting activities of the club, and the manner it is run, presently, in a vindictive manner, where disciplinary action on certain members is used to settle scores."

Revamped bar

The letter says there is more focus on entertainment and catering. "A huge sum was spent on renovating the bar, rather than sports and cricket tours from CCI to play against outstation teams, have virtually dried up.

We need to bring in more international tourneys for other sports too." When told that the CCI has a revamped badminton court, Bafna said, "Providing facilities is one thing, promoting the game is another."

Run-up

When Bafna was asked if he would contest the elections, he said, "I have not decided yet."

Excerpts from the letter

"Now, the time has come where members need to introspect to uphold the dignity and prestige of this esteemed institution.

In this campaign, we request members not to sign proxies without ascertaining the name and profile of the candidate who would be representing us."u00a0u00a0u00a0u00a0
