Vacation is over long ago and students are already engrossed with studies at school.

However, a majority of students studying in BMC schools have yet to start their academic year, thanks to false promises from the civic body's education department.

Still Waiting:u00a0 The BMC had promised to provide school rain gear to the students studying in the 1,174 BMC schools in the city by June 14.

The civic body had promised to provide 27 school gear (see box) by June 14 to all students studying in the 1,174 BMC schools in the city, but has not kept its word.

"This is Mumbai and not Bihar. We have to cater to 4.6 lakh students in more than 1,000 BMC schools.

The distribution work is on. There is a delay because of the vast number," said Abasaheb Jadhav, education officer, BMC. He admitted that the gear have not reached many schools.

"Most teachers believe the education department failed in its motive of attracting students.

Many parents are not sending there children to school," said Ramesh Joshi, general secretary, BMC teachers' union.

Those who have got the school gear say they are of the wrong size.

Promised

The BMC had said it would provide two uniforms, shoes, socks, tiffin box, raincoat, water bottle and stationary to every student.
