The state tourism body is serious about its Say No to Plastic campaign
In the monsoons, a weekend trip to an MTDC resort is a must for many Mumbai-kars. But this year, don't carry along any plastic bags.
To promote eco-friendly tourism in the state, MTDC is starting Say No to Plastic campaigns in their resorts at Malshej Ghat, Mahabaleshwar, Tarkarli, Ganpatipule, Karla, Matheran, among others.

MTDC will also fine tourists if they find them with plastic bags. "Carrying plastic bags to hill stations and beaches across the state and abandoning them there will now be strictly monitored.

We will educate and discourage tourists from using plastic bags," said Rajan Momin, senior manager, MTDC. Plastic bags, he added, were one of the reasons behind dying marine life.
The fine could be between Rs 500 and Rs 1,000 per violation.
To promote the theme, the MTDC is encouraging people to buy paper bags from vendors outside resorts.

"We are in the process of putting up signboards of dos and don'ts at our resorts. We will also have strategically placed garbage bins.

The Bombay Natural History Society is assisting us in putting up signs," said Momin.
Momin said tourists creating a ruckus or adding to the sound pollution by playing songs on their private players may also be fined.

MTDC is also planning a green makeover at all its resorts for which they are landscaping exteriors.
No plastic in Vile ParleLast month, over 35 resident associations and community groups joined hands for not using plastics, while the Kapol Co-operative Bank sponsored special cloth bags.
After the Clean Parle campaign was launched on May 6, even fisherwomen at the fish market in Vile Parle (East) have stopped the use of plastic bags.
The BMC authorities from the K-West ward, which launched the campaign, and the police are monitoring the campaign's implementation. A civic official said vendors violating the rules were being fined.
