According to police, Pillai was introduced to Chhota Rajan in 1989 and was working under him after that. "Our constable got a tip-off that Pillai was residing in Airoli and we started to keep watch.

On Tuesday evening, we nabbed him in Dharavi, when he'd come here for some work," informed Sadanand Rane, police inspector from Crime Branch Unit V.

Pillai had been absconding since 2010, and has several cases against him under the Arms Act in Dharavi. "He initially moved from Dharavi to Vashi and was staying with his brother. Recently, he moved to Airoli and we've been tracking him since then," said Police Inspector Shashikant Mane.

In his statement, the accused claimed that he is senior to gangster D K Rao, and initially, the duo worked together. "Pillai has been involved in many cases of murder, extortion and attempt to murder.

He never worked under Rao and considers himself senior to him. Later, the dreaded gangster (Rao) became more influential, while Pillai started working on a smaller scale," added Mane.

The accused also has three cases of robbery and assault registered against him in Goa, and several cases in Navi Mumbai. According to Mane, Pillai was also arrested in 2011 by the Navi Mumbai police in a cricket betting case. Pillai was produced in Killa court on Wednesday and has been remanded to judicial custody.
