Except for one newly-elected corporator, 64 of the 65 Shiv Sena (UBT) councilor-designates, elected in the recently held BMC Election 2026 completed the mandatory registration formalities on Wednesday, while the absence of one member sparked political speculation, reported the PTI.
The registration is a routine formality ahead of the formation of the new Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC), officials said, according to the PTI.
A senior Shiv Sena (UBT) leader dismissed speculation surrounding the absence of Dr Sheetal Mhaske at the divisional commissioner's office at Konkan Bhavan in Navi Mumbai, saying she has not gone incommunicado and remains in contact with the party.
Mhaske was elected from Ward 157 in the Chandivli area of eastern Mumbai in the January 15 BMC polls. She secured 14,749 votes, defeating her nearest BJP rival, Asha Tayade, the news agency reported.
In the high-stakes polls, the BJP-Shiv Sena combine ended the Thackerays' nearly three-decade-old control over India's richest civic body, paving the way for the installation of a Mahayuti mayor.
A total of 64 newly elected Sena (UBT) corporators were present for the registration, barring Mhaske, said a party corporator-elect who was part of the group that visited Konkan Bhavan. The corporator said he was unaware of the reason for Mhaske's absence or whether she had informed the party leadership about skipping the process.
Mhaske could not be reached for comment.
A senior BMC official said that after completing the registration, corporators-elect are required to submit the receipt to the BMC municipal secretary's office along with their winning certificates. However, the Sena (UBT) members did not visit the BMC headquarters to submit the documents, he added.
Apart from the 64 Sena (UBT) corporators-elect, 24 Congress members have completed the registration process so far.
On Monday, the Maharashtra government published a notification in the Extraordinary Gazette listing the names of all 227 elected BMC members.
Meanwhile, former Mumbai mayor Kishori Pednekar has been appointed group leader of the Shiv Sena (UBT) in the BMC, party leaders said.
The appointment comes as the BJP and the Eknath Shinde-led Shiv Sena are expected to command a majority in the civic body. Pednekar, who served as mayor during the Covid-19 pandemic, remained with Uddhav Thackeray following the Shiv Sena split in 2022.
