AMID concerns over rising air pollution in Mumbai and the Bombay High Court's ban on firecrackers, the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation's Education Department has launched a âFireworks-free festival, pollution-free environment' drive across schools.
Students will take a pledge to celebrate Diwali in an eco-friendly manner, help prevent air and noise pollution, protect their health and encourage friends and family members to do the same.
"The students took the pledge on Friday, and the drive will be conducted regularly. We also intend to invite parents to schools ahead of the festivities to raise awareness. Private schools across the city have been asked to conduct the drive as well," said Education Officer Sujata Khare.
Schools will also organise competitions to highlight the environmental hazards associated with firecrackers. Activities will include creating videos, reels, posters, slogans and banners to promote pollution-free celebrations. "The main objective of this campaign is to create awareness among students about an eco-friendly lifestyle and create a positive social movement to celebrate firecracker-free festivals and ceremonies," stated a letter issued by the BMC Education Department.
