Days after the deaths of three members of a family in Maharashtra's Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar, a Zilla Parishad member has called for a high protection wall along the cliff at Khavdya Hill, reported the PTI.
Sachin Garad, chairman of the ZP Finance Committee, said that stronger preventive measures were needed at the location and urged the district administration to take up the matter with the state government.
Garad said the cliff at Khavdya Hill, locally known as Khavdya Dongar, has witnessed several deaths over the years.
He said that simply deploying personnel to monitor the area would not be sufficient and called for a permanent physical barrier along the cliff edge.
Garad said he would submit a letter to the District Collector seeking the construction of a high protection wall and would pursue the matter through the district administration, according to the PTI.
The demand comes after a tragedy in Tisgaon on August 21, when three members of a family died after falling from Khavdya Hill.
The deceased were identified as Murlidhar Chandgude, 48, his wife Sangita, and their 19-year-old son Kunal.
The incident occurred on the afternoon of August 21 amid a domestic dispute, according to the report.
Garad said the recent incident had highlighted the need for immediate safety measures at the location.
Garad claimed that 12 to 13 people had died by suicide from the hill over the past four years, describing the location as having become a vulnerable spot.
He said authorities needed to take steps aimed at preventing further loss of life rather than relying solely on security personnel.
The ZP member said he would raise the issue with the state government through the district administration and seek action to make the area safer.
The proposed protection wall is intended to create a physical barrier along the dangerous stretch and restrict access to the cliff edge.
Garad said permanent preventive infrastructure was necessary to reduce the risk of further incidents at the site.
The district administration is expected to consider the demand as officials assess possible measures to improve safety at Khavdya Hill.
