Furtados, one of Mumbai's oldest musical instrument stores, is all set to launch its own music label.

Furtados Records will release its first compilation album this weekend, featuring songs by 10 rock and heavy metal bands.

The iconic music store, with branches in Dhobi Talao and Juhu, has been incorporating changes over the years.

IT'S ROCKING: The iconic Furtados store at Dhobi Talao.

First, they redesigned the flagship south Mumbai store, followed by a foray into expanding their retail presence across the country. Now, comes the music label.

Several genres

"People expect a standard of quality from us because we are a household name. We are here to promote young musicians who don't have a large label backing them," said Philip Rodricks, MD of Furtados Music.

Their first album, Because You Love Music Volume 1, features five bands each from Delhi and Mumbai.

Experimental

"We had a hard time picking out the list from a heap of entries. Rather than stick to a genre, we are going to explore projects with musicians who experiment with various sounds," said Rodricks.

The timing is just right, he explained, because the parent company can back musicians who perform under their label. "Organising events and concerts at various avenues or forums will be easy.

Our Bangalore store has a 1,500 sq ft performance space that can be opened out to bands who fall under
our label."

The albums will be promoted through their website, a complimentary music magazine, apart from being made available across all 14 retail outlets across the country.
