In an effort to squelch visual pollution in the city, Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation has approved the proposal for uniform-sized boards and hoardings for all shops.

The idea was first advanced in 2005, and has finally been accepted by the civic body. Now, the license department of BMC will determine a standard size that retailers will have to adhere to. Corporators, however, want some more changes in the policy, and so the civic body's law committee has referred this decision back to the administration. Though, the councillors believe that once implemented, the strategy will help curb defacement of the city.
A BMC official, on condition of anonymity, said, "We still have to come up with an appropriate plan, as demanded by the law committee, and then we will put it across the table for approval again." "We have referred back the proposal to the administration, so it can come up with changes, and then we will provide our suggestions and objections, as the policy is yet to be formulated," said Makrand Narvekar, revenue and law committee chairman, BMC.
