Several Std XII students were left shocked by their CBSE board results, prompting many to apply for re-evaluation. The board extended the re-evaluation deadline from May 19 to May 24 due to "unprecedented traffic" and "unauthorised interference" on the website.

This year, CBSE evaluated Std XII papers through the On-Screen Marking (OSM) system, where scanned answer sheets were uploaded digitally for checking. While teachers marked papers in the usual way, the software handled mark tallying.

Blurry copies

As students accessed scanned answer sheets, principals reported that some paper scans appeared blurry. "A few subjects the answer sheet scans were unclear which may have led to legibility problems. Here, the presentation and the handwriting of the student really counts," said Kalpana Dwivedi, principal, Bal Bharati School, Kharghar. She added that only 5 per cent of her Std XII students sought re-evaluation, while more Std X students applied as junior college students usually move on to further admissions.

Technical glitches

Social media was flooded with complaints from students, especially over low marks in Physics, Chemistry, Biology, and Mathematics. Dr HS Vashistha, principal of Delhi Public School, Nerul, and a nodal supervisor for the boards, said internet issues and unclear scans troubled teachers during correction. "Re-evaluation will be especially helpful for the science students. They have scored quite well in their JEE and have cleared the cutoffs. They are wondering what went wrong during Std XII boards," Vashistha added.

Fee relief

CBSE also reduced re-evaluation charges from Rs 100 to Rs 25 per question, while scanned copy fees were cut from Rs 700 to Rs 100. Students will receive refunds if their marks increase after re-evaluation. Mumbai educators are urging students to carefully review their answer books. "Some students who expected high scores are puzzled by their marks. OSM has simplified the process, but teachers lose some discretion while evaluating," said Nikita Bajaj, headmistress, RN Podar School, Santacruz.

CBSE response

In a statement issued on May 23, CBSE acknowledged complaints from students over portal access during peak traffic, payment confirmation delays, blurry or missing pages, and concerns over unmarked or wrongly marked answers. The board said the issues reflected both technical challenges and student anxiety during the post-result process. It added that timelines were extended and technical interventions were introduced to address the problems.
