Vihaan.AI, a programme launched by Air India in 2022, is a modernisation initiative aimed at upgrading 67 legacy narrow-body and wide-body aircraft. The airline began the retrofitting process in September 2024, starting with its Airbus A320neo fleet.

To date, 26 out of the 27 A320neos sent for retrofitting have been completed. The final aircraft is currently undergoing upgrades and is expected to rejoin the airline's fleet by the end of October. With the return of these retrofitted aircraft, Air India will be able to offer more flights to its customers.

Earlier this week, the airline announced plans to add 174 additional weekly flights on key domestic and short-haul international routes. These will be operated using its single-aisle aircraft as part of the airline's Northern Winter Schedule, which commences on October 26.

Starting from that date, passengers will be able to enjoy the amenities promised by the airline, which include:

. Eight luxurious seats in Business Class
. 24 extra legroom seats in Premium Economy
. 132 comfortable seats in Economy Class

These upgrades offer passengers increased comfort, including wider seats, subtle cabin lighting, improved legroom and pitch, as well as modern features such as portable electronic device (PED) holders and USB ports (both Type A and Type C) for charging mobile phones, laptops, and other gadgets.

These enhancements are designed to provide an inflight experience tailored to the expectations of today's discerning travellers.

With the final retrofitted A320neo set to return, the airline's narrow-body aircraft modernisation project is on track to conclude as scheduled.
