After witnessing a brief spell of dry weather over the past few days, Mumbai and its neighbouring districts are likely to see a fresh round of monsoon activity, with the India Meteorological Department (IMD) issuing a Yellow Alert for Mumbai, Thane and Palghar on Sunday.

IMD, while issuing a weather bulletin at 9:00 am on Sunday, highlighted that Mumbai and Thane are likely to experience heavy rainfall in the next 24 hours. Furthermore, it is likely to experience thunderstorms accompanied by lightning, gusty winds reaching 30-40 kmph, and heavy rainfall at isolated places during the day.

The Yellow Alert comes after several days of relatively subdued rainfall across Mumbai, offering respite from the persistent showers experienced earlier this month. The latest forecast indicates a revival of monsoon conditions over the region.

According to the IMD's 8 am weather forecast, the sky will remain generally cloudy over Mumbai and its suburban areas. Temperatures in Mumbai are likely to remain moderate, with the maximum temperature expected to hover around 31.6 degrees Celsius and the minimum around 24.5 degrees Celsius.

Tidal activity

The city is also set to witness a high tide of 4.37 metres at 3:40 pm, while another high tide of 3.75 metres is expected on Monday at 4:00 am. Low tide is expected at 09.49 am (1.16 metres), while the next low tide is expected on the next day at 9.33 am (1.77 metres).

Rainfall recorded in the last 24 hours in Mumbai

Between 8 am on July 18 and 8 am on July 19, Mumbai recorded the following average rainfall:

The IMD has advised residents to remain alert as heavy showers at isolated locations could lead to waterlogging, reduced visibility and traffic congestion. Commuters are advised to check weather updates before travelling and exercise caution during periods of intense rainfall.

Low-pressure area weakens over eastern India

According to the IMD, the low-pressure area over north Odisha and adjoining Jharkhand and Gangetic West Bengal has now shifted over Gangetic West Bengal and adjoining Jharkhand and north Odisha. The associated cyclonic circulation extends up to 5.8 km above mean sea level and is expected to weaken gradually over the next 24 hours.

The monsoon trough currently extends from Amritsar through Chandigarh, Shahjahanpur, Basti, Patna and the low-pressure area before reaching the northeast Bay of Bengal.

Meanwhile, a trough extending from the cyclonic circulation to the east-central Arabian Sea across Chhattisgarh, Vidarbha, Madhya Maharashtra and south Gujarat has become less marked, indicating weakening weather activity.
