Activist Deepak Rannaware has announced an indefinite hunger strike in Maharashtra's Jalna district from August 29, seeking government action on a range of demands concerning the Brahmin community.
Rannaware said he would begin the protest at Mahatma Gandhi Chaman in Jalna city and continue the fast to press the government to address the issues raised by the community.
One of the key demands raised by Rannaware is the allocation of Rs 1,000 crore in government funding to the Parshuram Arthik Vikas Mahamandal, an economic development body established two years ago.
Rannaware said he had previously staged two agitations seeking the establishment and strengthening of the Mahamandal. He alleged that even after its formation, only a small number of employees had been appointed and called for greater government support.
Another major demand is an increase in the annual income ceiling under the Economically Weaker Section (EWS) category.
Rannaware has sought that the existing annual family income limit of Rs 8 lakh be increased to Rs 15 lakh. He said the proposed change would enable more members of the community to benefit from provisions intended for economically weaker sections.
The activist has also demanded the establishment of dedicated coaching centres for Brahmin students preparing for competitive examinations.
In addition, he has called for free education for boys and girls belonging to the community.
According to the demands outlined by Rannaware, these measures are aimed at improving educational opportunities and supporting students seeking to pursue higher studies and competitive examinations.
Rannaware has also sought legislation to protect members of the Brahmin community against alleged abuses and caste-based slurs.
He demanded legal provisions on similar lines to those contained in the Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes (Prevention of Atrocities) Act.
The proposed indefinite fast is scheduled to begin on August 29 at Mahatma Gandhi Chaman in Jalna city. Rannaware has said the protest will focus on securing government action on the various demands raised for the community.
